Somserset LINk

11th November 2009

The purpose of the Road Show events was to create the opportunity to meet members of the public, inform them about LINks and gather their views and issues regarding health and social care.

Press releases were produced in local newspapers to promote the event.  Events took place throughout October in Chard, Frome, Bridgwater, Taunton and Minehead.  Local Market Town Managers were very supportive and waivered or kept charges to LINks to a minimum.  A choice of promotional items, a bright green rucksack or a cotton shopping bag full of goodies such as key rings, stress balls and yoyo were handed out at each venue.  This advertised the LINk and provided contact details for those interested in getting involved.  All items were produced by a local firm.  A substantial selection of general health information was ordered from the Primary Care Trust for display on the road show stands which the general public found very useful.  LINks literature was produced for display, including laminated posters, fliers, brochures, post-its, pens and comment cards.  We purchased a gazebo and tables to create a suitable stand and used the LINks graphic sidewinder banner stands.

The Stalls were manned by Stewardship group members and staff from Help and Care.  We were also delighted at the support given by a SREC community member and a volunteer from New Directions.  Generally the events were well supported. However, the inclement weather did play a part in some locations and resulted in less turn out than was hoped for.

Overall the Road show proved a success resulting in over 70 people registering with the Somerset Link and 34 issues being raised.  This was our first promotional event.  It is anticipated that more events will be rolled out next year to incorporate locations we were not able to cover on this occasion.

SomersetLinks One Day Conference 26th November 2009

Front Page Conference Conference 26 Nov

The first event held by the Somerset LINk took place on the 26th November 2009 at Lyngford House Conference centre in Taunton.  The event was well supported by LINk associates with over 70 individuals attending.

A great deal of work in preparation was made by Carole Hounsell and the Somerset Host team to ensure that the event had every opportunity of being a successful on the day.

The event was hosted by Carole Hounsell, the current Chairperson of the LINk Stewardship Group.  Carole was supported by the staff of the Host, (Help and Care) from both the Somerset and Torbay LINks.  The South West Regional Manager for the Host, Martyn Webster came down from Bournemouth to support the event.

The purpose of the event was to move the LINk forward and help it develop into an effective organisation and further develop the Somerset LINk work plan. The event commenced with some very interesting and topical presentations from the guest speakers, who provided a strategic overview of Health and Social care in Somerset.

These were: “Where are we now and what are the Future Challenges?” which was presented by Ann Anderson, Director of Strategy and Planning – NHS Somerset and Miriam Madison Head of Somerset County Council.

This was followed by Joe Ridgway Director of Organisational Development at Musgrove Park, Dr Rosie Bennyworth GP at St James’s medical Centre Taunton and Diana Rowe Director of Operation/CEO Somerset Partnership, delivering “The Vision, Opportunities and Threats”.  All the presentations were informative, well received and concluded with a joint question and answer session.  The support the speakers provided to this first Somerset LINk event was very much appreciated.

In the afternoon there was an interactive session to assist in the development of the LINk work plan.  This brought about much debate on the difficulties the Somerset LINk has had in making progress over the past year.  However, the interactive session did bring about twenty one topics for the Somerset LINk to consider when deciding what Health and Social Care issues it should look into to make a change to the people of Somerset.

Additionally a number of individuals have come forward to offer their time as active volunteers, either to become members of the Stewardship Group or take part is such activities as “Enter and View”.  The work of the LINk can only move forward if it is supported so if you would also like to help we would like to hear from you.

The Stewardship group and the Host staff would like to thank all of you who gave up your time to attend this event.  The contribution everyone made to make the event a success is very much appreciated.
