June 2011 e-news
Hello from the Somerset LINk!
As promised, here’s the June 2011 update from the Somerset LINk, where we’ve been super-busy putting together our Annual Report and preparing for the LINk AGM this Wednesday (6.30pm, Monk’s Yard, Ilminster).
We’ve also been up to lots of other report-writing and other exciting stuff, so here’s the June roundup of what’s been happening at the Somerset LINk:
Meet the volunteers!
Our new Stewardship Group and Priorities Panel have been persuaded to tell you a little bit about themselves via our website, so you can meet the volunteers online. Both groups have been getting the year off to a flying start and keeping the staff team on our toes and you can read the minutes from Stewardship Group and the minutes from the Priorities Panel on the website. You can also meet the volunteers in the flesh this Wednesday at the AGM.
Carers’ Champion Evaluation
We’ve now published our evaluation of the Carers’ Champion scheme that was rolled out across Somerset last year. The evaluation shows that the project was a success, with 90% of Carers’ Champions that had received feedback from patients and staff reporting positive feedback, and surgeries with Carers’ Champions increasing the numbers on their Carers’ Registers by an average of 56%. We are recommending that funding is sought to continue to support the Carers’ Champions to continue the excellent work that they are doing in GP practices across Somerset. You can read the full evaluation report here.
Enter & View Reports
Our Enter & View team have been busy this Spring with visits to two care homes: Grovelands Care Home in Yeovil and Chelston Park Care Home in Wellington. You can read our full reports and recommendations by downloading them from our website: Grovelands Report and Chelston Park Report or contact us and we’ll be happy to pop copies in the post for you.
South Somerset Disability Forum review Yeovil District Hospital
Following our Community Chest Fund last year, the South Somerset Disability Forum interviewed people to gather their opinions on Yeovil District Hospital. Wheelchair users and their carers raised issues about seating, parking and refuge areas. You can read the report of their findings on our website. We’ve contacted Yeovil District Hospital for their comments and actions, and we’ll let you publish their response as soon as we have it.
Musgrove Park Quality Account and Yeovil District Hospital Quality Account
A Quality Account is a document produced each year by a healthcare provider (such as a hospital). The idea is that this document is a way of monitoring the quality of a health service (so while your financial accounts might measure your finances, your Quality Account measures the quality of the service that you provide). Each year the LINk is invited to comment on local Quality Accounts and we’ve just published our responses to the Quality Accounts from Musgrove Park and Yeovil District Hospital. We’re also compiling our response to the Quality Account for the Somerset Partnership, so please get in touch if you would like to help with this piece of work.
During April and May, the Government took the opportunity of a natural break in the passage of the controversial Health Bill to "pause, listen, reflect and improve." Somerset LINk members were asked their views on the proposals in the Bill, and we collected your responses together and used them to put together the Somerset LINk's responses to the Bill. Thanks to everyone who responded - whether as an individual or as a group. You can read our final responses on our website.

Here’s a summary of the reports we’ve published since our last e-news. Please have a good read and let us know if you have any comments or would like any of these reports posted to you.
*If you have any comments on our Annual Report, please let us know before the AGM on Wednesday.
That's all folks!
That's all from us for now, but we promise to write again in July .... in the meantime, drop us a line if you
have any questions about our work or any views on health and social services in Somerset!
Best wishes from the staff team at the Somerset LINk
