Island’s Dignity Day a Great Success!
|
This year’s Dignity Action Day took place on Wednesday 1 February at St Thomas’s Square in Newport. It was arranged and run by the Isle of Wight Dignity Network and supported by the Isle of Wight LINk. Members of the public were met by representatives from St Mary’s Hospital, Age Concern, Islecare, Island Dignity and Barchester, plus Ellan Dyson and Jan Baldock of Wight Home Care were on hand with their ‘Daisy Bus’ (see image on left) that they use to take clients to social events.
“Dignity Action Day is the highlight of our dignity year, where we present both to the public and care homes that we're passionate about keeping up standards of dignity in care. We can all make a difference!”
Peter Garlick, Isle of Wight Dignity Champion.

After a chilly day in St Thomas’s Square, the Dignity Action Day participants soon warmed up at The Orchards Nursing Home in Newport, thanks to an event laid on by Lyn Morgan and her team. Attendees included: retired local farmer Eric Taylor, who has been a resident there for two years; Margaret Lawson who lives at the Lawns and Anthony Fleming; Pat and Don Marshall, who have been married for 52 years and were both born and bred on the Island. Don has been at The Orchards for two and a half years and Pat joined him six months ago.

Dignity Action Day events also took place at various venues across the Island, including:

- Sunnycliffe, Sandown
- Ryde House, Ryde
- Steephill Care Home, Ventnor
- Osbourne Cottage, East Cowes
- Polars, Newport
- Highfield House Ryde
- Eden House, Totland
“The work of dignity in care is a key part of the LINk’s philosophy on giving everyone a voice on health and social care issues. We will continue tosupport the Island Dignity Network and its Dignity Champions with all of the great work that they do.”
Chris Orchin, Isle of Wight LINk StewardshipGroup Chair.
