Shepton Mallet Community Hospital Review
Health services in Shepton Mallet are under review. Bob Champion, a local resident and LINk Representative has been invited to be part of the initial review group.
Health services in Shepton Mallet are under review. While there are no formal proposals yet, a review is being planned about the configuration of services in Shepton. The review is being organised by NHS Somerset, the Clinical Commissioning Group and Somerset Partnership.
The review is at an early stage and is looking at the activity in the community hospital and gathering information. A range of options needs to be considered, and a proposal for consultation will then be developed.
It is expected that proposals will come out of the review which will be put to a full public consultation in the spring. Views will be sought from the LINk, local Patient Participation Groups and the wider public in Somerset. Issues such as transport and the development of appropriate community-based health services will form part of the considerations in the proposals and the consultation.
Bob Champion - your LINk Rep on the review group
Bob Champion, vice-chair of the Steering Group of the Somerset LINk, has been invited to be part of the Review Group looking at the initial work that is part of this review. Bob is one of our most experienced volunteers. He lives in Shepton Mallet and has spent many years committed to patient involvement groups and projects, from Community Health Councils to LINks.
Vice Chair of Steering Group
Richard R Champion, known as Bob, spent the last 30 years of his working life with what's now called 'South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust'. He spent most of it on the road and on several occasions acted up to Station and Divisional Officer.
"I have been a Town and or a District Councillor since 1989, then in September 1998 appointed by Mendip District to be their representative to the Somerset Community Health Council, was made vice chairman for the last two years of its life. Then I joined the PPIs (Patient & Public Involvement) which replace the CHC health watchdog.
When on the CHC I became involved with the Somerset County Councils 'Overview & Scrutiny Committee' again a health watchdog, this involvement continued after the demise of the CHC, this when with the PPIs included Cornwall and Devon OSCs. In November 2003 I was appointed as a forum member to the 'South Western Ambulance Service PPI' and during our first meeting I was elected as Chairman of the Forum. In June 2007 I was approached by Taunton & Somerset Hospital to be a Mendip Public Governor which I accepted."
Bob is now the vice-chair of the Steering Group of the Somerset LINk. He has an interest in carers and local health services, particularly in his home town of Shepton Mallet.
