Annual health check for the NHS

New NHS performance ratings have been released by the Healthcare Commission. The independent watchdog has produced its third annual assessment of the National Health Service.
The overall picture for 2007/08 was published on 16th October 2008 with good news and visible improvements for the second year running.
The annual health check measures both the quality of healthcare services and the management of financial resources. This is carried out for 391 NHS trusts in England.
The results showed that trusts in the north of England performed best for both measures – quality of services and uses of resources – for the third year running, while trusts in the southwest delivered the most improvement.
Despite the new developments there are is still progress to be made by the NHS. 66 trusts had a decline in ratings and services such as GP access and provision of choice need to be made better.
